Not really a comparison, but the basis premise of the book is there's a very powerful family ruling the Empire. The Emperor and his line have glowing red eyes, believed touched by a god.

The emperor sends his young children away, each to learn different skills - his eldest son. With magic, royalty and adventure, The Emperor’s Blades has it all. I really enjoyed this book, and definitely plan to read the next two books in the trilogy. The siblings are so different, having grown up in vastly different areas of the empire, but they are also similar in their determination to save the Empire and protect one another from.
